in today's sea of books, what directly affects people's desire to buy is the content of books and the binding form of books. Books are not only commodities, but also a kind of culture. Therefore, a line, a line of words, a piece of color and an abstract symbol should achieve the perfect combination of form and content. External envelope, cover and cover of books; Internal ring lining, title page, text, illustration and copyright page; The material, format, printing and binding of books constitute the systematic project of books. Today, China paper takes you into these special packaging and printing products to introduce the contents in detail

the European "most beautiful book" Award Committee believes that: "the most beautiful book must have appropriate font and beautiful layout including title page and appendix. Each part of the book must be designed appropriately and meet the aesthetic requirements. The book as a whole includes paper, cover, cover, ring lining, printing and other elements, becoming a harmonious unity and convenient to use."

Lu Xun regarded books as a perfect whole, so he was very careful in illustration, cover, inscription, decoration, layout, paper, binding and edge cutting. In particular, he is proficient in plate making technology and printing process, and has many unique features in color, printing and the organic combination of line graphics

the author often browses various types of books and publications in bookstores, and analyzes the application of various printing technologies in book binding and production. In this paper, some cases are analyzed

I. about the use of two-color printing and color filters

dictionary books, especially foreign language dictionary books, often use two-color printing. But most of the use of two-color printing is just to make the layout colorful and beautiful. Only a few dictionaries are equipped with color filters. The color filter is very light. It can not only be used as a bookmark, but also make the content of the book more practical and increase the use function. At present, it is rarely used in the binding of books. Even if there are a few, it is not ideal

II. Design of spread pages

many books and periodicals now have spread pages. The most commonly used is the spread page of the front cover and the title page, followed by the spread page of the front cover and the last page, as well as the spread page between the book blocks. The cross page design can make the picture more atmospheric and beautiful, but the two cross page pages require the same color, accurate overprint, and high positioning after opening. Therefore, the effect of cross page is closely related to the printing technology and binding process

generally, the cover paper of books and periodicals is better than the book block paper, and the title page paper is the same as the book block. When printing, a 16 folio book or periodical has its cover, back cover, second cover and third cover assembled into a four folio self reproduction, which is printed on the four folio four-color offset press, while the title page and other body contents are assembled into a folio printing plate, which is printed on the folio offset press. The color of printed matter is directly related to the enlargement rate of printing dot area and the density of printing ink layer. The printing equipment, the technology of the printer captain and the ability to judge the color visually, as well as the whiteness, smoothness and absorption of the printed paper, will affect the color effect of the printed matter. If some small printing plants outsource the cover or book block to other factories for printing and processing due to equipment restrictions, the different printing adaptability of different factories, such as ink transparency, gray scale and color rendering, will exacerbate the color difference between two pages across the page

the spread of the third cover and the last page also faces this problem. Therefore, the following suggestions are made during printing:

(1) it is required to use the same brand of paper as far as possible for the front cover and the inner page

(2) in consideration of cost, the paper used for the book block is relatively poor. If offset paper or even writing paper is used, the title page at the cross page can be directly printed on the same paper as the cover, and it can be spliced on the same folio printing plate with the cover, so the color effect will be uniform. However, considering that the front cover, back cover, back cover, back cover, front and back cover plus the front and back of the title page are six pages in total to form a folio printing, which wastes a sheet of paper with two pages of eight pages, it can be considered to add a cross page between the front cover, back cover and the last page, or directly add a front and back printed insert, so as to make the most reasonable use of the cost. Of course, if this arrangement is made, the cost of binding will increase slightly, because the title page, insert page or the last page need to be pasted on the book block and cover as a single page. At the same time, the cover paper can not exceed 200g double copper, and the pasting effect of too thick paper is poor

(3) if the paper used for the cover is different from that used for the title page book block, the blue purple series that is easy to produce obvious color difference shall not be selected as far as possible during the design. When printing, the blue purple series is the most difficult to grasp the color uniformity, that is, the characteristic color of pest carriers, and even has the title of "ghost blue"

(4) the page size of two pages should be combined with the binding form. At present, the commonly used binding methods of books and periodicals include horse riding binding, sewing binding, adhesive binding, thread binding, etc. Horse riding binding is generally used for binding books and periodicals with less than 36 pages. The number of pages of thin paper can be more. For example, 128 grams of coated paper can reach 42 pages at most. Riding order is not only cheap, but also its pages can be completely spread out, especially suitable for cross page design, with good reading effect. The stitching is firm and suitable for both thick and thin books. In addition, the pages can be completely spread out when reading, which is also very suitable for cross page design. If there are many cross pages, you can manually align the stitching of each book post, so that the middle two pages of each book post are designed as cross pages, which has a very good effect. Of course, the binding cost will increase

adhesive binding is to brush glue on the spine after clamping each book post. In order to increase the contact area between the glue and the paper, increase the amount of glue, and improve the fastness of the glue, the back of the spine milling must be roughened before brushing, so the glue can penetrate into the binding opening of the book after brushing. The depth of back milling and roughening is related to the adhesive binding equipment of each printing plant, the thickness of books and periodicals, and the paper type. When the paper thickness increases, or the book thickness increases, the roughening depth increases. Therefore, the books bound with adhesive cannot be completely flattened when reading. The thicker the books, the more the middle part is covered when spreading. Therefore, the cross page design of the search and sorting of adhesive bound books in the index database must consider the thickness of the books. Generally: the roughening depth under normal conditions (about 300 pages, 108G coated paper) is 3mm

when wrapping the cover, the width of the binding opening is 6mm. Therefore, 6mm is reserved for the binding opening of the cover and the two pages of the title page; The same is true for the spread of the back cover and the last page. However, the setting position of the two pages of the cross page in the book block can only be left about 3mm respectively, which is much more. It is easy to show when you open it for reading, which greatly affects the beauty of the cross page; Some customers simply don't leave blank space at the reservation, and the cross page content is interrupted when reading, especially the map cross page, which is very taboo. It is considered that when reading, the pages of the books that produce high-performance mixed long fiber thermoplastic composites on both sides can be broken to make the cross page become a whole, which is not rigorous. Readers often try their best to tear the pages in order to see the blocked cross page content, resulting in page separation or paper tearing. Therefore, it is recommended to use thread gluing for books and periodicals with cross pages in the book block, because the book block can be glued only after it is glued after being locked, and the books and periodicals can be opened and flattened when being read, so it is not necessary to leave a position for binding when crossing pages

III. design of inserts

the design of inserts is mainly considered from the cost of printing and binding. Some books and periodicals use one or more inserts of the same size as the book block. In this case, the insert paper generally uses coated paper, which is different from the book block paper; Some books and periodicals also use inserts narrower than the book block. At this time, the insert paper is usually the same as the book block paper

1. To reduce the cost from the perspective of printing:

at present, domestic printing plants generally use two sizes of full-size paper: 787mm * 1092mm small-size paper, also known as standard size paper, and 889mm * 1194mm large-size paper. There are also some book and periodical printing plants with 850mm*1168mm and 880mm*1230mm paper of other specifications

it needs to be added: during the printing process, the paper also needs to be cut with smooth edges before printing (3mm on each side). Therefore, the net size of 787mm*1092mm paper after removing the paper burrs is 780 mm *1080 mm. Finally, the finished product also needs to be cut with smooth edges of at least 3mm. Therefore, the size of the 16 split finished product is 195 mm*290 mm; The net size of 889mm*1194mm large-scale paper after removing the paper burrs is 880mm *1190mm, and the size of the finished product in 16 format is 210 mm*285mm. During printing, the undercut (about 8mm) shall be reserved. In case of chromatic printing, the registration position of the crosshair (about 5mm) shall be reserved. Therefore, the net size of the graphic area shall be reasonably calculated

the number of pages in the book block shall be able to form the number of whole printing plates. That is, eight 16 folio or sixteen 32 folio page numbers are assembled into a folio printing plate and printed on the folio machine, and four 16 folio or eight 32 folio page numbers are assembled into a folio printing plate and printed on the folio machine. If the number of page numbers is small and cannot be combined into a whole printing plate, white paper shall be used to make up for it during printing. Before folding, the blank page numbers of the perfect device manufacturing and terminal utilization links shall be cut off, of course, a waste of paper

if the paper used for the insert is different from that used for the cover and book block, the number of printing plates must be taken into account when designing the page number of the insert. The method is the same as above, and the number of pages should be designed as a multiple of four. If the number of page numbers is small and cannot be combined into a whole printing plate, the paper will be wasted

if the insert paper is the same as the book block paper, although the insert page is narrower than the book block page, it can still be printed on the same printing plate with the book block page. Just cut it during folding and bind it separately. Therefore, the number of inserted pages plus the number of pages in the book block should be able to form a whole printed version to prevent waste of paper. Some books and periodicals should use a special size. When designing the number of pages, the size of the printing plate should also be taken into account to avoid unnecessary paper waste

2. Reduce the cost from the perspective of binding:

the binding cost of books and periodicals is divided into two categories: page folding fee and bookbinding fee. The folding fee is calculated by taking the book post as the unit, and the paper printed by a printing plate is folded into one post. The insert of a single page shall be pasted on the book post by machine or manually, and the pasting cost shall be calculated separately; Multi page inserts can be folded into book stickers by a folding machine, and the folding fee is calculated separately. Therefore, the book block before the insertion and the book block after the insertion must be folded separately. In order to save cost, it is best to make the number of page numbers of the book block before and after the insertion exactly be an integral multiple of the printed sheet, otherwise it will increase the cost and prolong the production period
